Before I moved home from N.C., I fostered dogs for a N.C. dog rescue. In the time I volunteered, we were a temporary home to 10-12 dogs that eventually were adopted into their forever homes. All but one, that is, because we adopted her and she is happily living out her life with three beds and a couch to choose to sleep on, and all the love and attention she wants.

This would not have been her fate, though, if the kill shelter she was pulled from had had its way. The day my dog was pulled from that shelter by the rescue was the day she was scheduled to be euthanized. Eleven years later, I still look at her and wonder why such a beautiful, happy, misunderstood (she’s part pit bull) would ever be chosen to die.
