CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — Lanie Richards scored the only goal of the game to lift North Marion past Liberty 1-0 in Big 10 Conference girls high school soccer action Thursday night at Mazzei-Reaser Field.
The Huskies (6-4-2) had the pressure on Liberty’s defense most of the night with several good scoring chances.
Finally, Richards got free on a beautiful lead pass from Megan Darrah, and Richards scored a breakaway goal into the right side of the net for a 1-0 NM lead at the 30-minute mark.
The Mountaineers got a good shot at the 32-minute mark from Emma Elliott, but Huskies goalkeeper Kayla Moore was up the task to make the save.
Saves were the theme of the night for Liberty goalkeeper Rylee Gray. Gray finished the evening with 14 saves as the Huskies held a 15-3 shot advantage, and it was her play in net and the Mountaineers’ defense that kept them in the game.
“Rylee continues to play well in goal, but we just have a difficult time generating offense,” Liberty coach Surin Vilain said. “I am proud of the way the girls played in back-to-back 1-0 losses (Tuesday against Lincoln), and we are playing hard with plenty of effort in every game to be a better team.”
Elliott had all three of Liberty’s shots on the evening, including a good shot attempt in the 65th minute, but Moore made the save to keep the Huskies ahead by the one-goal margin.
